Grady is Everywhere You Need Us

From taking stroke care to the streets to improving access to behavioral health treatment, we’re doing more to deliver care where it’s needed, when it’s needed. It’s a transformation that’s occurring both inside our main hospital and in diverse locations throughout the community we serve.

Closer to Home

Opened in 2018, Grady’s Camp Creek Comprehensive Care Center is a state-of-the-art facility that provides more extensive outpatient services than any neighborhood health center we’ve ever operated.

The 32,000-square-foot Center truly is comprehensive — providing primary care, pediatrics, geriatrics and specialty services such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, orthopedic sports medicine and same-day convenience care. Imaging capabilities include X-ray, CT scan and mammography. Whether routine checkups, women’s health services, pediatric care or specialty treatment of chronic disease, the Center can address most patients’ healthcare needs all in one convenient location.

offering comprehensive
cardiac care

As Grady works to strengthen our cardiac care offering, an important area of focus is to provide our patients closer, easier access to a broad range of cardiac services at our neighborhood health centers. At the Camp Creek Center patients have access to treadmill stress tests, echocardiography and other testing resources to assess and monitor their cardiac function.

Delivering Premier Stroke
Care When and Where It’s Needed

Offering specialized care and emerging therapies found in only a small percentage of hospitals worldwide, the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center is a top destination for stroke care in the Southeast.

Attesting to the Center’s capabilities and reputation, the number of patients treated for stroke increased by nearly 20% in 2018. Grady’s neuroscience team of physicians, nurses and technicians also conducts one of the region’s most active neuroscience research programs. Our outstanding clinicians have been at the forefront of several of the most significant breakthroughs to improve care of stroke victims.

Leading-Edge Stroke Care
Hits the Streets

In 2018, Grady enhanced our already strong reputation in stroke care with the deployment of Georgia’s first mobile stroke unit. Established in partnership with the Emory University School of Medicine and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, and as an initiative of the new Marcus Stroke Network, it’s an ambulance designed to take cutting-edge stroke care directly to patients. The mobile stroke unit features an experienced team of Grady medical professionals. While in the field, the team can perform a diagnostic scan, transmitting the image via telemedicine to neurology specialists at the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center for rapid assessment so treatment can be initiated immediately.

Offering Unmatched Expertise
to Treat Thousands of Trauma
Patients Each Year

Grady’s Marcus Trauma Center is the region’s premier, and only nationally verified, level 1 trauma center and is an invaluable resource to our community.

The Center is staffed 24/7/365 by multiple physician specialists — trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, neurosurgeons and orthopedic experts — as well as nurses and other highly trained clinicians.

How big is the need? Last year the Center’s trauma registry grew by 8%, to nearly 5,000 patients. Level 1 activations, which require the highest level of treatment, grew by 253 from the prior year. Fully 20% of patients are transferred to the Marcus Center from one of our more than 82 referring hospitals. Some are as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands and send their patients to Grady because of the exceptional personnel and capabilities found here.

The role of the Marcus Center extends to education as well. Trauma staff work in support of the State of Georgia’s Stop the Bleed initiative — offering courses in bleeding control to all public schools in the state. We helped train more than 1,400 people in these techniques in 2018, including school employees and personnel at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

On the Front Lines of
Behavioral Health

Grady’s clinicians treat a full array of behavioral health conditions from chronic to severe, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, ADHD and addiction.

But we know not everyone in our community has the access they need to behavioral health services, and too many conditions go undiagnosed. That’s why Grady is changing our delivery model in important ways. We’ve expanded behavioral health services by integrating them within all Grady primary care clinics, including neighborhood health centers. Behavioral health clinicians are now on staff at each center, and patients who need to be seen by a psychiatrist can do so quickly via a telemedicine consultation. The result: timely access to mental health services, better detection of untreated mental illness and, when appropriate, early intervention so a crisis can be avoided.

New Measures
to Confront the Opioid Crisis

Opioid addiction is a national crisis, and the Atlanta community is not immune. To help strengthen our capacity to respond with counseling and treatment for those affected, the Fulton County Commission, led by District 2 Commissioner Bob Ellis, added $620,000 to its fiscal year 2019 budget to support Grady’s Medication-Assisted Treatment Clinic for opioid addiction at our Park Place outpatient center.

PIVOTing toward a Safer Future

Grady trauma teams treat hundreds of
gunshot victims each year.

The high incidence of gun violence in our community is made worse by data that shows that, once injured by gunfire, an individual is more likely again to be injured or killed by violent means. Breaking that horrific cycle is the aim of PIVOT Atlanta — the Program to Interrupt Violence through Outreach and Treatment. This new partnership between Grady and the Atlanta Police Department provides support to patients, families and communities with strategies to reduce firearm-related violence. Grady’s PIVOT team supports eligible patients by helping them navigate resources and services, and by encouraging them to set personal goals to remain safe and avoid dangerous situations.

Providing Best-in-Class
EMS Near and Far

With new training and new services
reaching more communities

The Grady Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals who respond to more than 215,000 911 calls across the state annually are the most skilled and accomplished in the Southeast, with equipment, training and capabilities that are second to none. In 2018, Grady EMS extended its reach in exciting new ways — serving more communities and building new partnerships that deliver outstanding EMS care near and far.

Reaching All of South Fulton

Responding to the unanimous request of South Fulton County area government leaders, in July 2018 Grady EMS became the new 911 ambulance provider for the southern portion of Georgia’s most populous county. The new service area includes the City of South Fulton, unincorporated South Fulton, Union City, Fairburn, Chattahoochee Hills and Palmetto. To ensure best-in-class EMS service to residents of the area, Grady EMS established a new operations center in Union City and hired more than 100 additional EMS personnel.

A New Augusta Partnership

In Augusta-Richmond County, Georgia’s second-largest city, Grady EMS has forged a new partnership with Augusta University (AU) Health to improve interfacility transport services for AU patients. Grady EMS is now the official provider of hospital-to-hospital transports to AU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Georgia. Resources include a fleet of eight ambulances and a neonatal transport vehicle for critically ill newborns. We’ve also deployed our Mobile Integrated Health capabilities to deliver care directly to patients in their homes and help them avoid hospitalization.

Expanding Our South Georgia Presence

Grady’s reputation for EMS service excellence has earned assignments to be the official EMS provider to 10 counties in southwest Georgia, and for specialty care transport services to Phoebe Putney Health System in Albany. In 2018, we celebrated the opening our new South Georgia Headquarters in Albany to provide support to local Grady EMS personnel, 35 transport vehicles and to serve as a center to provide additional training.

Side-by-Side with Cancer Patients

A cancer diagnosis can be both frightening and bewildering — as the newly diagnosed patient confronts a complex treatment regimen that may include extensive tests, chemotherapy, radiation or other therapies.

That’s why Grady has introduced patient navigators, specially trained personnel to support cancer patients during this challenging time. Navigators serve as an information source and a single point of contact to help patients schedule clinic visits, testing, infusions or radiation therapy. Working closely with the clinical team, navigators provide a helping hand to patients to give them the best opportunity for successful treatment.

At the Bedside

With thoughtful care that brings smiles and hugs

Successful recovery from surgical procedures or other major conditions often requires more than medications, tests or traditional forms of
clinical care.

A patient’s emotional and psychological well-being plays a big role in restoring them to full health. Experience has shown that therapy dogs can contribute to an improved patient experience and better outcomes, providing stress relief and comfort to patients coping with serious medical conditions. Our Patient and Family Experience department introduced the Pet Therapy Program to put these four-legged healers to work in patient rooms and hallways. They are earning smiles and hugs wherever they travel.

On the Front Lines
Confronting HIV/AIDS

In the nearly four decades since AIDS was first identified in the United States, there have been dramatic improvements in testing, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS — making it a highly preventable and treatable disease.

Yet, despite those scientific and clinical breakthroughs, there’s a resurgence of HIV/AIDS throughout the southern U.S. — and Atlanta is the center of that upsurge. In fact, the CDC reports that in 2017 there were more than 1,600 new diagnoses of HIV infection in the Atlanta area, the third highest in the nation. Grady’s Ponce Center, one of the nation’s top HIV/AIDS centers, is at the forefront of this ongoing crisis, treating more than 6,000 patients in 2018. An expansion and redesign of the Ponce Center is currently underway, tapping public funding from Fulton and DeKalb counties, as well as private donations, to strengthen the Center’s capabilities in the battle against HIV/AIDS.

Putting Passion to Work

Among the impediments to effectively countering HIV/AIDS are social stigma, poverty and a lack of access to testing and treatment. In December, the Ponce Center hosted Sir Elton John, a passionate advocate in the fight against HIV/AIDS, at an event to spotlight the challenge. Attendees were urged to support the work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation in its campaign to fund broader access to testing and treatment.

CASS: A Game-Changing
Investment in Grady’s Future

As the demand for Grady’s services continues to grow, access to and scheduling of surgical procedures becomes an ever-greater challenge.

To address the need and increase capacity and efficiency, we will soon undertake construction of the Center for Advanced Surgical Services, or CASS. The Center will be the new site for outpatient surgeries, expanding our operating room capacity by 25% and providing much-needed new space for our specialty clinics to enhance the patient experience. Financing of the 260,000-square-foot facility is made possible by a 50/50 public-private partnership. The government component is derived from bonds issued by Fulton and DeKalb counties, and the remainder will come from private philanthropic funds. As one of the largest capital projects in our history, CASS will be a game-changer, improving capacity and access while strengthening Grady’s financial foundation for years to come.
