Deepening Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

We strive to support
and reflect the diversity of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives that enrich our
culture and drive innovation long term.”

Francesca Luthi,
Executive Vice President,
Chief Administrative Officer

For us, diversity, equity and inclusion is not only about common decency and common sense, it is also a strategic and business imperative. In 2020, we recognized the need to continue to advance diversity, equity and inclusion within Assurant and the communities we serve, particularly in light of the tragic murder of George Floyd and many others. Building on past initiatives, we’ve hosted candid enterprisewide conversations with our employees on race to ensure that we identify and address these issues in our society and within the workplace. We’re evaluating additional actions to support a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive community. All of this has continued to reinforce the criticality of supporting the evolving needs of all of our key stakeholders with purpose and commitment.

Our dedication to being a responsible, global employer includes many highlights in 2020:

  • Established a new Executive Inclusion Council chaired by CEO Alan Colberg to further leadership engagement and accountability at the Management Committee level and throughout Assurant
  • Included for the first time on the 2021 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index
  • Earned a perfect score of 100 for the third consecutive year on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index as a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality
  • Recognized as a “Best/Great Place to Work” in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Japan, Argentina, Mexico and Australia
  • Created virtual racial and ethnic forums for candid discussions and “Courageous Conversations” so that employees could share their experiences, discuss the impacts of racism, and focus on supporting social justice
  • Rolled out diverse slate and interviewing requirements for all managerial and above job openings beginning in 2021
  • Developed enterprise-wide diversity training that is ongoing to increase awareness of unconscious bias and cultivate greater inclusivity throughout Assurant
  • Conducted a multi-step pay equity initiative leveraging third-party expertise and objectivity to help ensure equitable compensation across employees with similar job skills and responsibilities

Importantly, from a supplier perspective, in 2020, we launched a Supplier DE&I registration portal to allow for increased opportunity for diverse businesses to register as potential suppliers for Assurant, while also creating a formal network of business-unit stakeholders to ensure collaboration and future progress of the program.
